Ben Fouché started Sheqafrica.com in June 2007. In May 2016, he sold the publication to De Novo Media, a division of the Cygma Group. As part of the sale, the editor of sheqafrica.com, Edmond Furter, stayed on until 28 February 2017 to complete the handover.
De Novo Media has since the take over, registered the website as a serial publication with the ISSN. This increased the popularity of sheqafrica.com and resulted in an increase of 80% in its Google Analytics data, with current page views almost double in March 2017.
