SA enforces UN emissions deal
February 8th, 2010South Africa has submitted an undertaking to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to reduce growth in greenhouse gas emissions.
The extent of the pledge requires a deviation from ‘business as usual’ of 34% by 2020, and 42% by 2025.
The targets are based on Long Term Mitigation Scenarios already published by the former Department of Environmental Affairs and Forestry in 2007.
“A detailed breakdown of the elements of the undertaking is required for sectors to fully understand the business impact”, commented the Chemicals and Allied Industries Association (CAIA). CAIA is working with Business Unity SA in their request to government regarding the breakdown.
“The impact on chemicals operators is likely to be significant, and it is imperative that a sound understanding is achieved,” CAIA said in February.
CAIA will be participating in the consultations around the development of the Green Paper on climate change policy expected by mid-year, in which it is anticipated that detailed sectoral mitigation actions will be included.
