E.C. Health Department’s Medical Waste
October 8th, 2008South Africa. The Auditor General has provided a picture of wholesale financial mismanagement in the Eastern Cape Health department.
His reports were tabled along with the annual reports in the provincial legislature, which is sitting in Graaff-Reinet.
The Health Department was specifically rapped for not complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act as medical waste was "burnt in open pits, disposed of with municipal waste, not highlighted as hazardous or not kept in a secure area".
The report added: "Not only could this endanger the employees of the department, but it could also put the health of the public at risk."
