Process safety forum

August 13th, 2009

Process engineers from Durban and Sasolburg joined their Gauteng colleagues at a well-attended Process Safety Forum in Johannesburg in August.

A lively exchange of resources, including safety alerts, lock-out procedure refinements, and reporting plans was hosted by Responsible Care manager Louise Lindeque at the Chemical and Allied Industries Association (CAIA) office in Auckland Park.

The forum plans to formalise incident reporting, by circulating alerts after removal of the names of organisations and people involved, for the benefit of industry and business at large. Most of the alerts, in Word or Powerpoint format, will include photographs, in the same way that Australian miners are informed of incidents and potential health and safety losses.

The forum also discussed a Best Practice Guide from the UK Chemical Industries Association (UK CIA), developed after a study by the UK CIA on process safety management and leadership practices.

Six best practice indicators are proposed to assess the effectiveness of any organisation’s process safety leadership, as well as a process safety leadership checklist.

The forum meet again on 5 November. Contact Janine Mileham on 011 482 1671, rcare@mweb.co.za
