Comply With Safety Laws Says Department of Labour
July 15th, 2009South Africa. The Department of Labour has warned construction companies not complying with Health and Safety laws, that they will be prosecuted.
Page Boikanyo of the department said that they were starting with a nationwide drive to ensure the Safety of workers.
Says Boikanyo: “With construction booming in the run-up to 2010, our approach will be underpinned by pillars of education and ensuring that there is compliance with labour standards.”
The Labour department’s inspection and enforcement division, will be driving the campaign and offending employers could face prosecution.
Boikanyo stated that a database of enforcement cases would be determined and a backlog reduction strategy would be created and acted on.
This drive comes hot on the heels of the labour minister, Membathisi Mdladlana’s words that the rights of the workers were human rights and that safety should prevail above profit.
