Master Builders SA safety awards winners

Master Builders SA honoured WBHO Tiber Bonvec JV, Aveng, Stefanutti, Belo and GVK Siyazama among leading performers in its Health and Safety Awards in 2011.
Three MBA Gauteng members who won regional awards, are also national winners;
• R500-m plus; WBHO Tiber Bonvec JV at Sandown 115 West Street
• R200-m to R500-m; Aveng Grinaker LTA at Medupi Power Station P35 AC
• R120-m to E200-m; Stefanutti Stocks at KPMG
MBA Gauteng regional winner, Tyris Construction, was placed second nationally by MBSA for its health and safety record at Wits Health Science building in the category for projects valued at R50-m to R120-m.
Four MBA Gauteng members won MBSA national third places after winning regional competition;
• Plant and storage yard third place; Tiber Bonvec Construction Village Deep storage yard
• Manufacturers third place; Aveng Grinaker LTA Facades factory in Jet Park, Boksburg
• Under R5-m third place; Belo and Kie Construction
• R5-m to R20-m third place; GVK Siyasama Construction Gauteng
The awards are made at MBA KwaZulu-Natal offices in Durban on November 16, 2011.
Doug Michell, MBA Gauteng occupational health and safety specialist, says regional members’ success is by far the MBA Gauteng’s best showing in recent years. “It reflects increasing concern about safety and health on construction sites by Gauteng provincial authorities, and testifies to MBA Gauteng’s continuing drive to bring a safety mindset across to our members.
“We are extremely proud of our members’ significant achievement and hope that this will lay the foundation for similar achievements in future.”

Advanced concrete technology diploma course
In other construction sector news, the Cement and Concrete Institute had changed the format of its 2012 -1213 Advanced Concrete Technology 18 month course, themed on ‘the ultimate goal of future concrete technologists’.
C&CI education and training manager Petrus Jooste says the format of the internationally recognised diploma course was modified after consultation with the SA construction industry and former graduates.
The 2012 to 2013 January to June course includes:
• Five day introduction and entry requirements
• Two seminars, in August 2012 and February 2013, featuring industry experts as lecturers, with site visits included
• Students complete 14 assignments
• Students choose either four prescribed individual assignments, or one major project
• Students gain free membership of the Concrete Society of Southern Africa during the course, and attend appropriate CSSA meetings during training
• Two three-hour exams, set by the Institute of Concrete Technology in the UK, are written in July 2013.
Jooste says the 18 month format reduces the time students are away from work. Project work has in the past been the downfall of many students who passed the exams, but could not complete a time consuming project before deadline.
The new format offers the option of four shorter assignments, spreading assignment work during the course. Registrations for the 2012 -2013 course closes on 30 November 2011.
