Electrical Installation Regulations
March 19th, 2009The Minister of Labour has, under section 43 of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, 1993 (Act No. 85 of 1993), after consultation with the Advisory Council for Occupational Health and Safety and the Minister of Finance, made the Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009 which were published in Government Notice R242 Regulation Gazette 9043 in Government Gazette 31975 of 06 March 2009.
These Regulations will be called the Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009, and will come into effect on 1 May 2009: Provided that regulation 5(6) will come into effect on 1 April 2010 Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009
Arrangement of the regulations will include:

- Responsibility for electrical installations
- Approved inspection authorities for electrical installations
- Functions of approved inspection authorities for electrical installations
- Design and construction
- Electrical contractor
- Certificate of compliance
- Commencement and permission to connect installation work
- Issuing of certificate of compliance
- Disputes
- Application for registration as a registered person
- Withdrawal of registration and approval
- Substitution of lost, damaged or destroyed certificate
- Fees payable
- Offences and penalties
- Repeal of regulations
- Short title and commencement

The following standards have been incorporated under the EIR, 2009:
SANS 10086-1: The installation, inspection and maintenance of electrical equipment used in explosive atmospheres Part 1: Installations including surface installations on mines;
SANS 10089-2: The petroleum industry -Part 2: Electrical and other installations in the distribution and marketing sector;
SANS 10108: The classification of hazardous locations and the selection of apparatus for use in such locations; and
SANS 10142-1: The wiring of premises Part 1: Low-voltage installations.
The Electrical Installation Regulations, 1992, promulgated by Government Notice R. 2920 of 23 October 1992, as amended by Government Notice No. R. 962 of 20 May 1994, will be repealed and replaced by the Electrical Installation Regulations, 2009.
