Fatality Reported At Harmony Gold

July 27th, 2009

South Africa – One mineworker has died and a second was injured after a rockfall at Harmony Gold’s Evander 2 Shaft on Friday, 23 July 2009.

Ironically, Evander has an excelled safety record and has already achieved two million fatality free shifts. Shafts 2 and 5 were recently awarded the Safety Achievement Flag in the category of deep level platinum and gold mining by the Mine Health and safety Council in April 2009.

In a statement made by Harmony’s chief executive officer, Graham Briggs the group committed itself to looking at all areas to ensure safety improvements were sustainable by improving the safety systems. Harmony management is committed to change the culture and behaviour of all employees and to achieve the aspirations set by each of the operations.

Says Briggs: ‘It remains tragic that this fatality occurred."
