Gautrain “fire” Exercise

August 8th, 2008

South Africa. Mine Rescue Services, Johannesburg Metro Police and Emergency Services took part in a surprise exercise yesterday at the Gautrain construction site.

The Gautrain constructors, Bombela Civils Joint Venture, and the Gauteng Disaster Management, carried out an emergency drill involving a simulated fire in the Marlboro Portal tunnel at Marlboro Gardens.

Senior Gauteng Disaster Management Service staff and Bombela’s senior Health and Safety officers coordinated the fire simulation inside the tunnel where approximately 75 construction personnel were already busy working.

The simulated fire was “started” at about 8am, with the chain of events unfolding quickly and producing considerable reaction from onlookers. The Mine Rescue Service, Johannesburg Metro Police and Emergency Rescue Services arrived at the scene soon after the incident report.

Bombela tried to make the scenario as realistic as possible. The activity tested crisis response timelines, evacuation procedures and emergency readiness. For Bombela the simulated emergency was a vital Health and Safety exercise in ensuring the readiness of the crisis response team and Bombela’s Health and Safety measures.

No one was injured during the exercise.
