Harmony Gold Fatalities Investigated

April 21st, 2009

South Africa. Harmony Gold has reported that there will be a probe into the two fatalities at their Evander operations in Mpumalanga.

The Department of Minerals and Energy imposed a Section 54 notice on the shaft after two workers were killed when they were overwhelmed by an oxygen deficiency while climbing into a travellling way of a discontinued production area.

The two workers were part of a team installing electrical cables in a haulage as part of infrastructure repairs being undertaken in preparation for a new mining project.

Mariaan van der Walt, spokesperson for Harmony Gold, reported that there was no indication of when the investigation would be finalised. Production would not be affected as the shaft where the fatalities occured was not operational.
