Hazard Identification & Risk Assessment

May 3rd, 2011

COURSE DATES : 3-4 May 2011

COURSE AIM

Learners who achieve accreditation for this module are able to identify, weight, and assess occupational safety, health, and environmental hazards and participate in baseline and continuous multi-disciplinary HIRA activities.

Section 8 of the OHSAct implies that any SHEQ/SHE/H&S management system start with the identification of hazards and risks within the working environment. This is the foundation of the management system.

It is interesting to see how few employees know the difference between a hazard and a risk. It is also known that if you know the hazards and risks involved in your occupation, you are more aware and cautious when performing your job.

COURSE OUTCOMES

At the end of this course, with the use of the HIRA course manual, you will be able to:

  • Identify significant hazards in the workplace.
  • Identify the potential impact that selected hazards could have on employees, others, and the environment.
  • Interpret and allocate weights to existing exposure levels and the “potential for growth” against documented standard.
  • Identify and initiate suitable risk management and control methods and procedures (engineering followed by administrative and PPE controls).
  • Inform all at risk parties about the nature, cause and effect of uncontrolled hazard exposures.
  • Initiate effective risk control measures, procedures, and review.
Venue: Advantage ACT Training Centre Pretoria
