Industry Supports National Environmental Week

June 4th, 2008

South Africa. The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality will join the country in celebrating the National Environment Week by raising awareness on environmental issues at the Ekurhuleni Youth Environment (EYE) camp.

In celebrating the National Environment Week from Thursday to 8 June, high school learners from Ekurhuleni region will from Friday gather at the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve in Heidelberg to acquire valuable knowledge that will enhance their understanding about the importance of nature and life skills.

The environment week aims to raise awareness on environmental issues.

To mark the significance of the week, on Friday learners would present poetry, essays and posters regarding their research on how consumption of the natural resources in their school affects its ecosystems.

Learners would also be required to recommend action that may be taken to reverse the rate of consumption in order to conserve the limited natural resources.

During the event, speakers from various organisations including government departments will be showcasing career opportunities in the sector and educating learners on how to take care of the environment.

The EYE camp which is an initiative by the Ekurhuleni Metro, the Gauteng Department of Education, Gauteng Department Agriculture, Conservation and Environment, the East Rand Water Care Company and Phamodzi Gold will then continue with activities aimed at tapping into the learners’ primal instincts.

Meanwhile, the dream to instil environmental awareness in communities will become a reality when the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and Miss Earth South Africa sign the first Green Pledge in the country on World Environment Day on Thursday.

The event will used to cement their commitment to environmental development and conservation of natural resources for future generations.

The pledge will ensure that the organisations take part in programmes aimed at promoting environmental awareness within communities in Ekurhuleni, which is the official home of Miss Earth SA.

In addition, the greening project which began in September last year is to continue as the metro’s Parks Division donates seeds to be planted by primary school pupils, the Ekurhuleni executive mayor Duma Nkosi, Miss Earth finalists, celebrity guests and other dignitaries.

The seeds would be planted in 600 glass jars supplied by Consol, then later removed and planted in the ground.
