Firm to manage Kampala Health and Safety

December 11th, 2007

Uganda. Kampala City Council has contracted a private company to manage the Health and Safety of people in the city. Some of the stakeholders include managers, institutions of learning, restaurants, hospitals, hostels, and communication companies.

The Company’s Managing Director, Paul Mutawe said they would carry out Health and Safety campaigns as well as training to improve on people’s Safety.

He said this will involve inspection and maintenance of equipment, building, teaching people how to handle food and hygiene, harmful substances, equipment, fires and safety, first aid, accident prevention, hazards and risks and risk assessment.

Officiating at the launch of the campaign in Kampala last week, Local Government Minister Kahinda Otafiire welcomed the move.

Citing the example of a Hotel Building in Bwebajja which collapsed and killed several workers, Gen. Otafiire said many Ugandans still work or live below normal Health and Safety standards.

He attributed this to failure by Ugandans to adhere to the Health and Safety laws that are in place.

Gen. Otafiire said that when he was still the Environment minister, his ministry banned public smoking but some people politicised it saying he was imposing on them harsh policies and the ban failed to work out.

He also aid that as Local Government’s Minister, he instructed KCC to ban food vending in the city to save the public from consuming unhygienic food but people are still vending food.

He commended KCC for contracting this company to improve on the Health and Safety of people in Kampala saying it would save the lives of several people.

City Mayor, Al-Haji Nasser Sebaggala said KCC would give the company maximum support to ensure that they effectively protect lives. Innovative Masters, linked to Gold Mark Management are specialists in Health and Safety training and management.

The Innovative Masters Holdings Limited, will be charged with improving the organisational capacities, and competencies to enhance Health and Safety development.

Mr Mutawe said their company will achieve the mission through facilitating regulated Health and Safety conscious environment to the benefit both public and private stakeholders.
