Master builders train construction HSE cadets

May 18th, 2010

The Gauteng Master Builders Association’s second 2010 training scheme for construction site HS&E officials attracted 23 students.

The eight -month health, safety and environment (HS&E) training programme that started on May 3, is attended by 23 students, compared to 19 in the first session of 2009.

Graduates of the 2009 programme were all employed on Gauteng building sites.

The 23 students include nine women. All are aged between 19 and 57, and 19 are unemployed. Training is provided by a consultant led by training specialist Joep Joubert.

Colin de Kock, executive director of GMBA, said the training provided last year was a positive step towards alleviating a serious shortage of trained construction safety officers in Gauteng.

“In presenting another course this year, GMBA is complying with industrial need and with the aims of the Department of Labour, which has enthusiastically welcomed our initiative,” De Kock said.

Doug Michell, GMBA HS&E officer, said visits to sites where the 2009 training course graduates were employed, had clearly shown that the skills of the new safety officers were valued and applied by their new employers.
