MHI Regulations to change
October 5th, 2009The Major Hazard Installation (MHI) Regulations are due for an update. A state body, the OHS Act Advisory Council, had appointed a SANAS technical team to formulate updates that had become evident during the first ten years since the regulations became effective.
The first meeting on 9 October 2009 at the DOL office in Pretoria, was set to plan the way for a review of the effectiveness of the MHI Regulations. Nigel Coni of Ishecon, a member of the committee, said in October that nominations were received from the Department of Labour, local government, industry, organised labour, and risk specialists.
Organised labour had initially not made a nomination to the technical team, delaying progress for six months. Meanwhile, some major operators had proposed to the Department of Labour to use the SANAS draft document as a guideline.
