South Africa. A miner was killed when a rock fell on him at Xstrata’s Thorncliffe mine near Steelpoort in Limpopo, an Xstrata spokesperson said on Thursday.
“Aaron Mkhawane, who was a rock drill operator, died when a rock fell on top of him on Wednesday afternoon,” said Xstrata spokesperson Songezo Zibi.
He said Mkhawane (26) had been removing scaling material in front of a rock face when the incident occurred.
“Mining operations at the chrome mine’s two shafts are continuing following the Inspector of Mines’ visit. A thorough investigation into the cause of the incident will be conducted.
“No such incident has occurred in a couple of years, the mine regrets the incident,” said Zibi.
National Union of Mineworkers spokesperson Lesiba Seshoka said the number of mine deaths was unacceptable.
