Labour To Conduct More Inspections

August 11th, 2009

South Africa. Inspections will be conducted on employers in the iron and steel industries who were served with contravention notices, the Department of Labour said on 11 August 2009.

Thobile Lamati, Chief Inspector at the Department, said the focus of this week’s inspections would be on ensuring compliance with Health and Safety regulations.

“It is the minister’s position that workers’ lives are sacrosanct and that employers should not sacrifice workers’ lives for profit,” Lamati said.

“The initial inspection identified the two sectors as being among the culprits in terms of risk. The situation is worrying especially regarding small employers and sub-contractors.”

Lamati said the construction sector remained one of South Africa’s most dangerous workplaces, and the department would stop at nothing to ensure safe and healthy workplaces.
