Waste Act workshops in Johannesburg and Durban

The SA Waste Act extends responsibility for waste management to producers, via designers, handlers, retailers, users, recyclers and disposal service providers.
Extended accountability for product life cycles impacts all products, resources and commodities, including the chemicals industry, prescribing a preventative approach to environmental management.
The Act requires waste minimisation and pollution prevention as critical components of waste management planning and practice.
National norms and standards, in terms of section 7 of the Waste Act, to apply to waste classification, storage, treatment, disposal, minimisation, recycling and recovery, as well as contaminated land, is being formulated.
The new norms and standards will be written into legislation, resulting in industry having to comply with even more stringent requirements and the risk of severe liability for persons and companies in contravention.
A workshop in two cities in June will explore aspects to be covered by specific norms and standards as well as Waste Act requirements, including licensing and the responsibilities of waste holders regarding storage and transport.
Workshop focus areas include:
• Classification of hazardous waste
• Recycling, re-use and recovery
• Framework for the management of contaminated land in South Africa
• Listed activities licensing process
• General duty of waste holders in storage and transport
• Comment procedures on waste legislation and strategy
• Stringent Waste Acceptance Criteria to landfill for the Chemical Sector
• Making the most of the framework for managing contaminated land
• Waste Management Facility licensing process
• Responsibilities of waste holders, generators, storage, and transport.
Delegates will include Responsible Care management representatives, Sheq managers and coordinators, legal compliance managers, SO14001 implementers.
The workshops aim to teach the proposed methodology to be used for classification of hazardous waste as well as requirements for recycling, re-use and recovery.
TABLE; Current waste management hierarchy in SA should be turned around, with prioritisation reversed to Reduce, Re-use, Recycle, Recover or Recover energy, and Dispose.
