Wastecon in East London in October 2012

Wastecon, bi-annual conference of the Institute of Waste Management of Southern Africa (IWMSA), is hosted in East London, SA, on 8 -12 October 2012.
This year’s conference is themed on ‘Wrestling with Waste, Employment, Environment and Engineering’, says Steve Kalule, Wastecon 2012 chairman. He notes “difficulty and challenges in managing waste and related issues. This is especially pronounced in situations, municipalities and communities with limited resources.”
The conference also aims to address difficulties faced by the SA Eastern Cape province as one of the poorest regions in South Africa, in resources and knowledge, and how “municipalities and communities are experimenting in developing partnerships to create jobs and to use waste as a resource.”
Papers and posters would be aligned to the theme ‘Wrestling with Waste’, encompassing the three Es of Employment, Environment and Engineering, including issues like waste to wages, job creation, societal benefits, recycling and reuse, licensing, groundwater monitoring, landfills, waste transfer stations and disposal.
IWMSA provides education and training for members, and facilitates interest groups to network and exchange information, including in the formulation of legislation.
