The Cygma Group has stopped selling its SHEQ Franchises in South Africa. The current franchise owned by Cygma SHEQ North(Pty)Ltd has been granted the exclusive rights for South Africa as its exclusive territory.
According to the Cygma Group, the decision was taken after the South African Institute of Safety & Health(Saiosh) revoked the Corporate membership application of a group of Saiosh members who started a company called Sheqafrica Corporate Services(Pty)Ltd. Saiosh did not provide reasons for their decision, but it is alleged that the long standing feud between Neels Nortje, the CEO of Saiosh and Rudy Maritz, former publisher of Sheqafrica.com, about professional registration and government interference with the right to practice has something to do with the decision.
Cygma said that there is no room for hypocricy in OHS and that they do not recognise Saiosh as a professional body, given their vindictive attitude. The Group has since adopted a policy to only employ IOSH UK, ASSP and PECB certified professionals as franchisees in Africa(excluding SA), Asia, Europe and the Americas.
